It has been awhile!

More food to come? :D

8/9/11 12:14 am - the start of AY2011/2012

First day of school, and it was awesome. Was so happy to go back to school - because of friends and familiar faces, the hugs, the laughter, the jokes, the catching-up. I feel so different, so positive and energized stepping into school today - exchange has really done my soul a lot of good. Or rather, the events that happened and the people I've met during exchange have blessed me so much. It's really a new start, a good beginning, and I hope things will stay that way. So thankful for this last year I have in school. :)

4/7/11 12:26 am - the kitchen god's wife by amy tan (1)

an excerpt. Gan was haunted by a ghost when he was young. The ghost named him nine bad fates that he will suffer before he dies.

After Gan told me this story, he was trembling hard, as if it were winter-cold outside, and not the wet warmth of autumn. I could see he believed the story. Even I was scared. I was too frightened even to ask him, What were the eight fates that have already happened? I could only laugh and say, "What a bad dream you had in your little-boy days!"

At the time I did not know why I said that. That was not the feeling I had inside me. Just the opposite. Inside, I wanted to hold poor Gan against my heart and cry, My boy, my beautiful little boy! Are you sure about the eight bad fates? What were they? What is the ninth? Hurry, tell me!

But now that I remember my feelings, I know why I did not say this to Gan. I was afraid, not because of the ghost, but for another reason. I was a married woman, yet I had never felt love from a man, or for a man. And that night I almost did. I felt the danger, that this was how you love someone, one person letting out fears, the other drawing closer to soothe the pain. And then more would pour out, everything that has been hidden, more and more - sorrow, shame, loneliness, all the old aches, so much released until you overflowed with joy to be rid of it, until it was too late to stop this new joy from taking over your heart.

But I stopped myself. I kept myself hidden. I only laughed at Gan and made fun of his ghost dream to comfort him, to comfort myself.

8/4/09 02:38 am - wining and dining

Found several good food blogs from stumbleupon! Too lazy to put up links for now.

Am seriously contemplating starting a foodblog, don't know if I should collaborate with lishenkorkor or just start one of my own (since our styles are so different - writing style, pictures, food places we blog about). Really can't decide whether diversity is indeed a good "selling point" or not... On one hand we could do a collaboration and make diversity/variety/two-blogger-combi a unique selling point (quote val and her marketing knowledge), or I could venture out on my own and make a product with its own blog philosophy, target food places, etc. This is a dilemma I want to solve soon. When the blonde manager of 7atenine asked for my blog address, I couldn't tell her dhues cos it's not truly a food blog. I didn't want random restaurant managers knowing so much about my life. Haha.

Anyway, yes I've visited 7atenine today, finally! (Sorry to the ppl I asked out for 7atenine and pangseh-ed :/ ) It was a great experience, I don't know why the waitstaff was so nice to Bel and I. Haha. It pays to dress well and dress up when you're living it up wining and dining (heh!). The last time we went out to eat together (at some liang seah steamboat restaurant) we got extra good service too! I think giving off a loving friendly smiley vibe makes the waitstaff like you and serve you better. Haha. Well, having a Canon 5D with you certainly ups your status too I guess. Haha. The photos are in the midst of post-processing (something new I'm learning from my bro), so watch out for a post on 7atenine when the photos are ready!

7/29/09 03:52 pm - zento makan session

I missed the registration for this makan session by about half an hour I think. Oh well. :(

Anyone knows where does good sushi? The best sushi rice I remember having is at Sakuraya Fish Market at B1 of Parkway Parade. Cannot think of where else has good nigiri sushi.

7/18/09 09:03 pm - Red Star + Books Actually

Wee! Back from FOC. I need to spend some time writing down reflections for FOC but that's a huge task left for another day.

Today we (Rachel Glad Bel Me) went for dimsum at Red Star Restaurant! I don't have photos cos the lighting wasn't good and the food's presentation wasn't great either. Even though the taste is not what you'll get at say Jing or Royal China, the vibe/ambience/taste really brought me a 温馨的感觉. Things to note:

1. Siewmais nowadays are overloaded with big fat prawns, as if restaurants are trying to show off their readily available source of big fat prawns. The siewmai in Red Star had good ol' meat that reminded me of siewmais I ate when I was young :)

2. The fried prawn dumplings were surprisingly good. There were pieces of water chestnut for added crunch. It was oozing "juice" (ok lah it was oil. But nice oil kind u know.) The skin was crispy yet softly disintegrating. (Not like that stupid crispy fry that totally didn't disintegrate in my mouth but gave me a scratch in my mouth that led to an ulcer).

3. The Egg Tart was fantastic! I finished the huge tart (and I don't usually eat egg tarts). The custard had a nice balance of egg and sugar. And the pastry was flaky didn't feel "gelak".

4. The dessert. I liked the Mango Pudding and the Ice Jelly thing.

5. The most important reason why I'll come back here again - the ambience! The restaurant is HUGE and decked out in oriental fashion. Nice chinese vibe :) And the friendly waitresses go around in pushcarts "selling" the dimsum to us! If I had a tourist friend, I'll totally bring her here anyday over some place like Crystal Jade. Easier on the pockets too; if I didn't have enough money to go to Royal China I would take her here.

Okay so anyway, after the yummy adventure, Godma brought us to this really cosy bookstore called Books Actually. Everyone should go there! Support local authors too! They have a good collection of books by local authors. I bought this book titled Lions in Winter by Wena Poon... a collection of short stories about "displaced Singaporeans". Jason we're supposed to share this book! And also this book of poetry by Alfian Sa'at for Jo/HG. :) Can't wait to go back there again! Let me know if any of you are interested in these books! Ok I have to end abruptly now going for dinner!
